Finalist – “UNDERGROWTH”
The 2016 Just Write Short Story Competition was run by John Murray Press / Hodder & Stoughton in conjunction with The Writing Magazine. An open-themed competition, it was open to the international readership of the magazine.
Having completed my short story “Undergrowth” a few months prior, I decided to submit it on a whim, though I had little hope that a rather gory horror short story would be to the tastes of such a mainstream magazine.
However, much to my surprise, “Undergrowth” was shortlisted and made the final six short stories. On a sunny August afternoon, I found myself invited to the H&S HQ on the embankment of the River Thames where I met the other five writers – who were all incredibly friendly and welcoming – and sipped (free!) champagne on the roof terrace as the winner was announced.
Each writer was interviewed; see my rather embarrassing video below!
I never expected to place in such a competition, so to make the final six was a huge boost to my confidence, as was being told by one of the judging panel that they thought my story would make the basis of a fine horror novel (something I am currently developing!).
